An up and coming Cape Verdean performer contacted me to create the cover to her first single. As someone who takes pride in my culture and heritage, I wanted to make something that represents tradition but is still true to the song. After some brainstorming, we decided on the conta de ojo. This is a piece of jewelry that is believed to ward off evil spirits and protect the wearer from harm. I wear one around my neck faithfully and so does this singer. I decided to make this piece the center of the cover with a simple background. A delicate font felt right to capture the traditional violins and keys and lyrics that speak of a true love. Take a listen below.
